Hello! I'm Mia Butcher, a book cover designer and illustrator at Bloomsbury Publishing in London, where I work across a broad range of adult fiction and non-fiction titles – taking a brief and turning it into something you'd pick up off a shelf.
My covers span literary fiction, crime and thriller, history, politics and illustrated books. Some recent highlights include three books celebrating the life and work of Anthony Bourdain: anniversary editions of Kitchen Confidential and Les Halles Cookbook, and The Anthony Bourdain Reader. Elsewhere on the list: The Rest Is History books with Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, history and narrative non-fiction by Frank Dikötter, Jonathan Healey and Nandini Das, front and backlist designs for Niall Williams, and A Case of Mice and Murder by Sally Smith – a cover I also illustrated.
Before publishing got its claws in me I spent ten years as a freelance graphic designer – working with startups, charities, arts organisations and hospitality across branding, print, digital and web. I also completed around 200 rebranding and signage projects for independent pubs across the UK, which remains one of the more characterful chapters of my career.
I joined Bloomsbury in 2019 as a Marketing Designer. There I created print and digital campaign materials for leading adult and children's titles – including all Sarah J. Maas global campaign materials for the launch of House of Earth and Blood and the ACOTAR series relaunch in 2020. In 2021 I made the move into cover design, which is where I feel most at home creatively.
I hold a first-class degree in Media Production (Photography) from the University of Surrey, and remain a keen photographer alongside my design work.
A Constant Reader and lifelong believer that the truth is out there, horror and science-fiction are staples of my reading list. I'm probably listening to an audiobook right now.Â
I came out as a transgender woman in 2024 – something I'm proud of, and glad to be open about in work that I love.
